  16. <p>    Sailing the Sea of Lies
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral
  19. William Crowe is angrily denying that he approved a massive "sea
  20. of lies" cover-up in connection with the 1988 downing of an
  21. Iranian commercial airliner with 290 people aboard. Crowe, who
  22. will testify before the House Armed Services Committee next
  23. week, has already torpedoed a major contention in the conspiracy
  24. case having to do with a secret war in which the U.S. allegedly
  25. seized not only the Iranian minelayer Iran Ajr but also "several
  26. others," including a second vessel, the Rakish. Photos released
  27. at the time by the Pentagon, however, show that the Rakish and
  28. the Iran Ajr are actually one and the same. One official says
  29. no other ships were captured, casting doubt on the secret-war
  30. charge.

  32. <p>    Once Burned, Twice Bold
  33. </p>
  34. <p>    London's Sunday Times, apparently unfazed by its
  35. embarrassment over publishing what proved to be faked "diaries"
  36. of Adolf Hitler nine years ago, seems to be courting trouble
  37. again. The paper is publishing what it bills as new segments
  38. from the diaries of Hitler's propaganda chief, JOSEPH GOEBBELS.
  39. (His description of Kristallnacht: "The sky is blood red. The
  40. synagogue is burning. Bravo! Bravo!") The controversy this time,
  41. however, does not revolve around whether the diaries are
  42. genuine; parts have already been authenticated and published.
  43. Instead, it centers on the paper's hiring of the pro-Nazi
  44. revisionist historian David Irving to handle the project. Among
  45. other things, Irving denies that the Holocaust happened, calling
  46. the Auschwitz gas chambers "a figment of British propaganda,"
  47. and claims that Hitler was unfairly vilified for his role in
  48. World War II atrocities.

  50. <p>    No Great Revelations
  51. </p>
  52. <p>    The U.S. Senate unanimously demanded earlier this month
  53. that the Bush Administration declassify and make public all
  54. secret POW/MIA documents now in the Pentagon's possession. But
  55. what exactly is in them? Insiders who have reviewed the papers
  56. say anxious families are in for a big disappointment once
  57. again. All relevant documents were shown to family members long
  58. ago, and more than 1.3 million pages have already been shown to
  59. members and staff of the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA
  60. Affairs without any convincing results. Key sections of some
  61. internal Pentagon memorandums have already been leaked, and
  62. although they reflect "sloppy" and "unprofessional" running of
  63. the mia office, according to individuals charged with studying
  64. them, they add nothing substantive to the search for surviving
  65. Americans.
  66. </p>
  67. <p>    Reach Out and Diss Someone
  68. </p>
  69. <p>    The opposition research units of the Bush and Clinton
  70. campaigns, which dig up dirt on their enemies, will act as the
  71. first lines of offense when the mudslinging starts in earnest.
  72. Surprisingly, some "oppo" operatives do talk regularly to their
  73. rivals by telephone. What could they possibly have to discuss?
  74. "I call to ridicule their pathetic attempts to attack us," says
  75. one oppo specialist. "Then we trade insults." Nothing like a
  76. little destructive criticism to get the juices flowing.
  77. </p>
  78. <p>    HEADCOUNT
  79. </p>
  80. <p>    Sentenced to 40 years in prison last week, General MANUEL
  81. NORIEGA is not likely to do his time in a country-club setting.
  82. But his co-conspirators are being rewarded with light sentences
  83. and various goodies for testifying against him:
  84. </p>
  85. <p>    ROBERTO STRIEDINGER, the Medellin drug cartel's top guy in
  86. the U.S., will spend five years in a minimum-security facility
  87. and keep millions of dollars in drug profits and his collection
  88. of military assault rifles.
  89. </p>
  90. <p>    DAVID RODRIGO ORTIZ-HERMIDA, a cartel drug pilot, will
  91. serve just 120 days and then get placed in the federal
  92. witness-protection program.
  93. </p>
  94. <p>    DANIEL MIRANDA, who flew drug profits to Panama, will
  95. serve two years but then will get his pilot's license back,
  96. along with a U.S. visa.
  97. </p>
  98. <p>    A REALLY HOT GAME
  99. </p>
  100. <p>    If Washington Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke realizes his
  101. ambition of replacing R.F.K. Stadium with a 78,600-seat arena
  102. on the Potomac Yard site in Virginia, just south of Washington,
  103. the football teams that play there may have to wear moonsuits.
  104. Officials of the Environmental Protection Agency say that after
  105. years of creosote soaking and casual dumping of chemical wastes
  106. at the onetime railroad switching station, the area is so
  107. contaminated it could qualify for Superfund environmental
  108. treatment.
